Mourners Pay Respect to Pope Francis

So many people lined up to see Pope Francis lying in state at St. Peter’s Basilica that the Vatican kept the doors open all night, closing for just one hour from 6 a.m. until 7 a.m. Thursday. The Vatican said more than 50,000 people had paid their last respects in the first 12 hours of the public viewing, which started at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Francis, who died Monday after a stroke, is lying in a simple wooden coffin in front of the main altar, inclined on a slight ramp toward mourners. The Vatican had announced that the basilica would be open until midnight, but then indicated it would extend the hours due to higher-than-expected turnout.

Iran Agrees To Discuss Restoring Nuclear Monitoring

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency says Iran has agreed to allow in a technical team from the U.N. nuclear watchdog to discuss restoring camera surveillance at its nuclear sites. IAEA head Rafael Mariano Grossi spoke to reporters in Washington on Wednesday after meetings with Iranian leaders in Tehran last week. Grossi says it's a promising sign for U.S.-Iran talks over the Islamic Republic's nuclear program. Grossi says Iranian leaders appear to be engaged in the talks “with a sense of trying to get to an agreement." The U.S. is looking to ensure Iran doesn’t develop nuclear weapons, while Iran wants the easing of sanctions that have damaged its economy.

FBI Says Cybercrime Costs Rose To At Least $16 Billion In 2024

Cybercrime of all stripes cost victims globally more than $16 billion dollars last year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a report released on Wednesday. The losses – a one-third increase over 2023 – were largely driven by low tech scams, such as would-be investors swindled out of money online, or company employees tricked by deceptive emails into wiring large sums to criminals’ bank accounts. Tech support and romance scams also caused hundreds of millions of dollars in losses, the bureau said. The figures were collated by the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, which has become a clearinghouse for reports of digital fraud and hacking, and drew on nearly 860,000 complaints, the bureau said. Losses from cybercrime are notoriously hard to calculate. The FBI’s figures are among the most comprehensive, but the bureau acknowledged that its calculations were incomplete, particularly with regard to ransomware, a particularly destructive breed of software used by hackers to extort organizations into making ransom payments in return for their data. While the complaints gathered by the FBI came from around the world, the overwhelming majority were filed in the U.S.
