The SAVE Act cleared its first Senate hurdle 51-49 — and Democrats spent the day making the case for it without realizing it.
Senator Merkley took to the floor to denounce the bill and accidentally handed Republicans their best campaign ad of the year: "This bill is about stopping groups from voting who tend to vote for Democrats." He meant it as an attack. He confirmed that illegal immigrants are a reliable Democratic voting bloc and that the party knows it. Ted Lieu went on television and claimed a driver's license doesn't count as voter ID under the SAVE Act — a lie Larry fact-checked in real time with the I-9 form, which every American already uses to prove citizenship when they get a job. Jamie Raskin called it a "slave act" and a "poll tax," suggesting married women are too confused by paperwork to vote.
John Thune is holding the filibuster in place and gambling that Chuck Schumer will show restraint when Democrats return to the majority. Larry reminds viewers that Kevin McCarthy made the same bet with Nancy Pelosi — and lost his gavel the first week this show was on the air. Jessica Tarlov's live meltdown on Fox over the SAVE Act may have said more about Democratic desperation than any senator's floor speech.
