Rand Paul used his position as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee to turn Markwayne Mullin's confirmation hearing into a personal grudge match — and Mullin wasn't having it.
Paul opened by calling Mullin a liar, demanding he say to his face that the assault on Paul was justified. Mullin set aside his opening statement and responded directly: he called it character assassination, reminded the room he has proof Paul spent millions fighting him in campaigns, and told Paul flat out that their history has nothing to do with his ability to lead 250,000 men and women at DHS. The exchange was raw, unscripted, and the most honest moment in a Senate hearing in recent memory.
