Ricky Dillard Upbeat Performance Of “Hold On”

Good luck trying to stay seated while watching this rousing, upbeat performance of “Hold On” by Ricky Dillard and New G! It will have your heart pumping and your soul jumping with excitement for Jesus!

Born in 1985 in Chicago, Illinois, Ricky Rydell Dillard began leading the junior choir at St. Bethel Baptist Church at the ripe old age of 5. Ricky’s mother struggled as a single mom on four, but her faith was strong. Ricky grew up going to church and hearing gospel music, and those early years made a lasting impression.

Graduating from high school in 1984, Ricky began making music professionally soon after. Initially, he played and performed dance and hip-hop music, but he soon returned to his gospel roots. Ricky said, “I don't criticize because I believe all music was created to praise God and all we're doing is taking back what the Devil stole from us and using it to please God.”

In this video, Ricky and his group are most definitely praising and pleasing God. The performance is pleasing to all of us watching, too. Can you imagine worshiping with Ricky and New G in person on September 9, 2023 at Liberty Township in Ohio when this performance was recorded? What a thrill that would have been!

On November 3, 2023, “Hold On” was released as a single, the first from Ricky’s 13th album, entitled Choirmaster II; the album will be released on January 26, 2024.

Ricky Dillard (a.k.a. Dr. Dillard) is surely a master as he effortlessly and energetically directs the throngs of singers and instrumentalists on the stage. While he’s dressed in a white choir robe, the other musicians are clad in dark blue robes and wear cross pins or necklaces. The ladies don blue organza veils. Their uniformity conveys a sense of regality and respect, but there is nothing stuffy about the way in which they worship!

The group’s dance moves, claps, and gestures are largely synchronized. Their smiles are radiant, their voices are powerful, and their enthusiasm is contagious! Ricky is highly entertaining—pointing, jumping, and leading his choir in a stirring song about hanging on, holding on, and enduring until God brings us through the hard stuff of life.

“Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heaven!” Psalms 150:1

TobyMac “Faithfully” Official Music Video

TobyMac’s song “Faithfully” and the accompanying official music video describe and depict the artist’s process of grieving and writing about the tremendous personal loss he and his family experienced in October 2019.

Many of us look back at the disappointments and joys over the course of a year as we begin a new one. However, absolutely nothing marks a year forever like a tragedy or the loss of a loved one, particularly a child.

“Faithfully,” included on TobyMac’s August 2022 album Life After Death, deals with the devastation that loss creates in a person’s life as well as the recognition that God is with us through it all. TobyMac experienced that devastation in the worst possible way when his 19-year-old son, Truett Foster McKeehan, died of an accidental drug overdose.

TobyMac shared with Movieguide, “The truth is, I didn’t know grief, really. I just felt like everything was beautiful and perfect until the last few years. And then, when we lost Truett, everything changed, and I met grief in the fiercest way.”

Here are the first four lines of “Faithfully:”

It’s been a long year; it almost took me down I swear
Life was so good, I’m not so sure we knew what we had
I’ll never be the same man, I’ll never feel like I felt before
It’s been a hard year, it almost took me down

The video begins as TobyMac sits down to do an interview; he seems to be preparing to share his story of loss. Then, we see him writing and composing in a studio and on what appears to be his tour bus. He writes key phrases and doodles with his Bible nearby, eventually creating the verses and chorus of a song that demonstrates healing—possible only through His quiet, gentle, transformative love.

The new version of “Faithfully” was released as a single in September 2023. TobyMac wrote in an Instagram post about the new version, “The main difference in the recording is that the bridge is musically more driving and sung an octave higher with more intensity and passion.” The bridge begins at 1:50.

As the song closes, the singer-songwriter emerges from inside the studio/bus into the sunshine of a new, brighter day.

As we close out one year, whether it be filled with sorrow and trials or triumph and success, may we do so knowing that God is faithfully there through it all.

“Then Jacob tore his clothes and dressed himself in burlap. He mourned deeply for his son for a long time.” Genesis 37:34
